Product Introduction
1. Product Description
There are generally three types of power factor compensation for submerged arc furnaces and electric furnaces: high-voltage compensation, medium-voltage compensation, and low-voltage compensation.
The so-called medium-voltage compensation utilizes the transformer's 10 kV medium-voltage winding for compensation purposes.
Medium-voltage compensation can be divided into two types:
(1) Medium-voltage shunt compensation
The function of medium-voltage shunt compensation is similar to that of high-voltage compensation. It is mainly used when the voltage on the high-voltage side of the furnace transformer is too high for effective compensation. In such cases, medium-voltage shunt compensation is adopted. However, this method cannot solve the problem of insufficient output capability of the transformer's low-voltage winding.

(2) Medium-voltage series compensation
The function of medium-voltage series compensation is similar to that of low-voltage shunt compensation. It can improve the output capability of the furnace transformer while also increasing the power factor to above 0.92.
Longitudinal compensation, also known as series compensation, involves connecting compensation capacitors in series with the main power circuit. Since the reactive power generated by the capacitors is directly related to the electrode current, the compensation system can closely track fluctuations in the reactive power demand of the load and provide real-time compensation. As a result, voltage fluctuations on the power bus can be effectively minimized. Compared with shunt compensation, series compensation can increase the secondary voltage of the transformer, thereby increasing the active power delivered to the furnace. If the primary and secondary windings of the transformer are maintained at their rated currents, the apparent power absorbed by the furnace can exceed the transformer's rated capacity.
In our engineering practice, the series compensation system is implemented by connecting compensation capacitors in series with the medium-voltage winding of the furnace transformer. The current flowing through the capacitors is in phase with the load current.
